- If you are looking to live in outer London then try and pick somewhere that has a National Railway station as well as a tube - it will be much faster for you to get into the city.
- If you want to find out how easy it will be to travel to your work from a house you are looking at then phone the Transport Number 020 7222 1234 - you can give them your start and end point and they will tell you which buses / trains to take. If it is more than two different buses then ask them how long the journey will take as it may not be viable.
- Take your time and don't listen to letting agents who may claim that properties are getting taken very quickly.
- If things in the property need fixing / replacing / changing, then ask for them to be done - if the carpet looks threadbare then ask for a new one - you may not get it but it's always worth asking.
- If you are taking on a house or flat with a group of friends then ask the utility companies, gas phone etc to put all names on the bill so that everyone shares the responsibility!
- Keep an accommodation file with records /copies / receipts for everything relating to your accommodation and tenancy.
- If agents try to charge you for providing information about the properties they have to let then do not use them. This is illegal.
BritBound Tip -- a calendar month is not made up of four weeks. For example, agencies may advertise a weekly rent of £60. However if the rent is required monthly this will not simply be multiplied by four. Instead the calculation used is £60 multiplied by 52 (weeks) divided by 12 (months) therefore giving a monthly payment of £260.00.
